The Olive Tree of the Witch

According to ancient legends handed down from the popular oral tradition and not from written sources, around the tree were consumed pagan rites and, after the invocation of the priests, The olive tree was contorted in an incredible way, taking on disturbing forms so that it was considered a kind of witchcraft and also for this reason it was called Olive of the Witch. During the Etruscan period it is said that around this tree and under its fronds the Wishes and Aruspici officiated their rites to question and reveal the future. Just to make a reference on the sacredness of places, we must remember that in the area of Magliano, in S. Maria in Borraccia, was found, in 1883, the “disc of Heba” on which are engraved about 70 words in Etruscan language that refer to dedicatory formulas and rituals for sacrifices to the heavenly and infere deities: Tin (Jupiter), Maris (Mars), Canthas and Calu (god of death, whose corresponding animal was the wolf), specifying the offers to be made, the time and place.
